Glorious mansion with sweeping views over the Tamar Valley

Sandhill House B&B is a luxury rural retreat just outside Tavistock, with three king-sized guest bedrooms and beautiful views.

All rooms have en-suite facilities, complimentary toiletries, hair dryer and white towels. They are fitted with flatscreen TVs and provided with generous welcome trays including Cornish biscuits. All bedroom linens are cruelty/feather free and, of course, there’s WiFi throughout.

Though continuously inhabited since the 13th century, the house was developed in the Georgian era to a standard befitting a 19th century mine owner. There’s a lovely south-facing sitting room and terrace, and a Georgian dining room where delicious breakfasts start each day.

Sandhill House is approached by a woodland Carriage Drive and is surrounded by two acres of horticultural ‘treasure trove’ gardens, including a Southern Spanish water garden, formal gardens and plenty of seating. The views over the Ha Ha! stretch the length of the Tamar Valley and onwards to Dartmoor National Park. The grounds extend over a further 12 acres of flower meadows and wildlife ‘sanctuary’ so there’s plenty of scope to explore.

Sandhill House B&B suggests:

For an quieter, romantic experience consider Sandhill House’s Tamar Orchard Barn. This former apple store has been tastefully converted into a lovely self-catering cottage sleeping two, with a king-sized ensuite bedroom, kitchenetter and its own private south-facing terrace and garden.

Location

Sandhill House is beautifully rural, but with the Tamar Valley Scenic Railway line at the end of its woodland Carriage Drive it is uniquely accessible even without a car: just head for Gunnislake Station on the Tamar Valley Line from the historic naval city, Plymouth. There's a good pub in walking distance and plenty more in driving range. Tavistock is a 10-minute drive away; Dartmoor is 15 and it's easy to get to any of Cornwall's beaches or moors. The local National Trust property is Cotehele House, 3 miles away with plenty more close by and there are Norman Castles, fishing villages and RHS gardens to explore. The Tamar Trail provides 26km of walking routes, with the opportunity to try tree surfing or kayaking, and there are scenic rail journeys and river tours to explore further. From Spring 2023 Sandhill House will be on the new 90-mile coast to coast walking trail, finally linking the coast path into a circular Cornish walk. RHS Rosemoor and the Eden Project can both be reached in less than an hour by car.

Reviews

"We’ve just returned from a fabulous break at Sandhill House. Mary looked after us and my disabled father in law like we were family, nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms were fab, ours overlooked the chapel and my father in laws room had stunning views over the Tamar valley. The rooms are spacious and you can see the quality of everything in there.
Breakfast was a real treat and once again quality ingredients and great cooking came to the fore. It’s easy to order too much as the choice is fab. The cooked breakfast was excellent but the scrambled egg and salmon was on another level.
We really enjoyed our short break and meeting Mary, Andrew and Fudge (aka the butler) made our stay extra special. A big thank you to Mary for going the extra mile and treating my father in law to a birthday cake and afternoon tea, it helped make his day very special.
We’ll be sure to stay again when we’re next in the area!"

Mary Corin

  • Bio : Your host here is Mary Corin who, when not preparing delicious Sandhill House breakfasts, can often be found in the grounds: tending the Spanish water garden, the sheltered formal gardens and the woodland Carriage Drive leading up to the main house. She welcomes guests helped by Fudge, the dog, who revels in his role as Sandhill House's butler.
