Formerly East Galloway, Kirkcudbrightshire is a historic county in southwestern Scotland. It is centered around the town of Kirkcudbright, a lively fishing harbour with pastel-coloured houses and a fiercely artistic tradition. Inland from the rocky and indented coast on the Solway Firth to the south it rears up into a mountainous land of lochs and glens, high passes and sparkling tarns. This is Robert the Bruce country, now a part of Dumfries and Galloway; you’d hardly believe Cumbria was just to the south.
