Ross-shire is redolent with the history and traditions of the Highlands and borders Sutherland, Inverness-shire, with a complicated – and sometimes contested frontier with Cromarty to the south. The county town is Dingwall, also known as Tain, many leading attractions are wild and remote: Eilean Donan Castle has a spectacular lake setting, Corrieshalloch Gorge brings waterfalls and a Victorian suspension bridge, and Bienn Eighe Nature Reserve was Britain’s first protected area, with temperate rainforest and spectacular wildlife.
