Spoilt rotten, those College Farm goats

The Goat Shed is a brand-new self-contained one-bedroom cottage with its own private courtyard garden. It has a fully-equipped open-plan kitchen, a log burner for cooler evenings,  and a west-facing patio with a fire pit for long summer evenings. There’s a free-standing bath at the foot of the bed, but also a more conventional bathroom with rainforest shower. It’s been transformed from what was once an agricultural home for College Farm’s goats into an elegant and luxurious haven, with soaring beams over contemporary comforts. It’s a perfect rural stay for couples looking for a few nights away.

The Goat Shed is set near College Farm B&B, with equal access to its grounds. These are a delight with a mix of natural beauty and plenty of history. There are seventeen acres in all, dotted with pingos, the ponds and lakes unique to the area that date back to the last Ice Age. Resident animals include alpacas, llamas and chickens, enlivening flower and vegetable gardens, sweeping fields with stately trees, woodlands to explore and animals to meet.

The Goat Shed suggests:

Get breakfast with your stay at College Farm B&B, with three guest bedrooms in the main farmhouse. There’s also the Cattle Shed, a party barn that’s set in its own extensive gardens and is ideal for weddings and bespoke events, with a field for guests who want to camp. The farm is very popular for weddings – it’s easy to see why – so book well ahead for summer weekends.

Location

The Goat Shed is a lavishly restored agricultural building near - but not attached to - College Farm. College Farm is situated in 'The Brecks', The land that stretches from Thetford to Swaffham. This sandy, heathy land has a unique flora and fauna. Within College Farm's land are at least three 'pingos', distinctive lakes left by the last Ice Age. These are unique to this area in the UK, with the only other pingos being found in the Arctic Tundra, and you share the experience with four alpacas, 2 llamas and various resideent chickens. You can walk straight from College Farm's garden to the east into into Thompson Common, a Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) famous for its dragonflies and otters, with a seven-mile 'Pingo Trail' allowing you to structure your visit. To the west are 300 acres of woodlands, protected by the Woodland Trust, that shelter various raptors. If not dining in there's a pub within walking distance serving very good meals. College Farm is ten miles from Thetford and in easy reach of the coast, Cambridge and Ely.

Katharine & Richard Wolstenholme

Hosted by Katharine & Richard Wolstenholme

Your hosts here are Katharine and Richard Wolstenholme. College Farm is Katharine's childhood home: the guest bedrooms are named after her brothers who occupied them while her own bedroom has been converted into one of the en-suite bathrooms. Further back, she's a direct descendant of the original founders of the Chantry that was to become College Farm, way back in 1349. More to the point she's a fantastic cook. Her home-grown rhubarb compote is the stuff of a legendary breakfast, picnic lunches can be provided on request and her evening meals are superb. You'll probably see less of Richard, who is an architect.
