A taste of the country five miles from Leeds

Outwood House is a B&B with four ensuite guest bedrooms in Horsforth, five miles from the centre of Leeds and five miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, set in an an acre of mature gardens.

The four guest bedrooms are superbly comfortable. The Wharfedale bedroom has a Super King four poster bed with separate dressing room and bathroom with a deep roll top bath and separate enclosed shower. The Nidderdale bedroom has a Super King bed which can also be arranged as twin single beds, with a roll top bath and overhead shower. The Malhamdale bedroom has a Super King bed, which again can be arranged as twin single beds, with an ensuite shower. These three rooms are south facing with a view of the garden, field and woods beyond. The fourth bedroom is called Airedale, which offers a standard double bed, luxurious for a single guest, and faces west over the neighbouring 18th century barn, courtyard and field, with an art deco bath with shower over. Beds are handmade, mattresses are from Harrison Spinks and fabrics from Abraham Moon.

Guests are looked after here. Armchairs are available in the bay window of the dining room and in the day room – both with a view of the garden. The snug has additional seating and a log burner for colder days, and a copy of The Times is provided daily.

Breakfast is a significan occasion and features local ingredients, including some from the kitchen garden in season. There’s a buffet offering cereals, fresh fruit, cheeses and yoghurts. Hot dishes are cooked to order: options include a Full Yorkshire, Eggs Benedict, and Avocado on Sourdough. Special dietary requirements can easily be accommodated and there are vegetarian and vegan options. Breakfast can be served in the garden during summer.

The garden is a highlight. There’s a sunny terrace, lawn with sun loungers, and gravel paths snaking through an acre of grounds.

Outwood House is a Georgian farmhouse that dates from 1754. It was once home to Richard Oastler, the “Factory King,” famous for his successful campaign that led to Parliament reducing the working day for children to ten hours. There are board games and jigsaws, the library has a quarter size snooker table, and the upstairs landing has a desk for plugging in a laptop. The lawn is perfect for playing croquet as well as the more unusual Finnish family game, Mölkky.

While the city has grown inevitably around it the atmosphere is that of a country house with a rural and relaxed feel.
