A Tardis-like Haven in the Yorkshire Dales

Mickley B&B is a luxury Bed and Breakfast with two guest bedrooms in the Nidderdale AONB. It’s five miles west of Ripon, within the borders of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and just west of the North York Moors. Though it looks small from outside it’s huge from within. Since it opened in 2012 it’s gathered countless rave reviews, and is self-rated as probably the best B&B in North Yorkshire (if Carlsberg can do it….)

Accommodation is in two guest bedrooms. The Amber Suite has a king-sized pocket-sprung bed (though it’s zip-and-linked so can be converted into twins) and an ensuite sitting room with views over the churchyard. There are two televisions, an armchair, sofa and desk with plenty of hanging and storage space. Ensuite facilities include a bath with  shower over and bathrobes are provided. The Blue Room has two pocket-sprung single beds, TV with radio and DVD and an armchair. Bathrobes are again provided, with a private bathroom with bath and shower over just across a corridor. Linens are of the highest-count Egyptian cotton and duvets and pillows are down and feather, though synthetic can be provided for those with allergies. The house has full central heating but twin hot water bottles are provided for a touch of comfort on winter nights.

Children are welcome by arrangement and Mickley has high chairs, a changing mat, and a range of toys. It does not, however, have trundle beds, so you’ll need to bring camp beds and sleeping bags for any children to use. The Amber room is especially suitable for this as the sitting room provides ample extra space. There is a nominal charge: call ahead to discuss your requirements. Older children can, of course, take the Blue Room at the usual rate.

Breakfast at Mickley is something of a highlight. Breakfasts are served in the light and airy dining room, with freshly-squeezed orange juice, home-made marmalade and other jams provided. Cooked options, all freshly made to order using local ingredients and served pan to plate, are delicious. Special diets can be catered for if mentioned on booking: we need to buy in ingredients. Continental breakfasts are also available, and these can be delivered to your door on a tray if you feel like a pampering breakfast in bed.

Guests here are not confined to their rooms. There’s a guest sitting room with a log fire for winter evenings, and French doors into the garden for summer months. It’s well stocked with games and books though there’s also a TV.  Candlelit dinners are also available by arrangement, with a choice of two, three or four courses available, and if you want you can cook your own barbeque on our sun terrace.

Mickley is dog-friendly, with bowls for water and dog towels you can borrow. Please advise on booking whether you wish to bring a dog so we can discuss arrangements.

Mickley B&B suggests:

Mickley Village is one of the most traditional villages in Nidderdales AONB. It’s a quiet place without street lighting and the night skies are stunning. Whether or not you have an interest in astronomy it’s hard not to take an interest in the stars here and three miles away the Lime Tree Observatory and Planetarium gives you the chance to learn more.

Location

Mickley B&B is quietly set in the tranquil village of Mickley, itself one of the most traditional and beautiful settlements in the Dales. Walks are from the door: it's 350 metres to the Mickley entrance for Hackhall Wood Walks, one of the most beautiful woodlands in the country created in the 1800's around a 350m gorge: views are spectacular. It's three miles to the Lightwater Valley Theme Park, with Europe's longest rollercoaster; three to the Lime Tree Observatory and Planetarium and three to Hilltop Equestrian Centre and the Masham Riding and Trekking Centre. It's a ten-minute drive to Thornborough Henges, one of the UK's most important Neolithic sites: it's not for nothing this is known as 'The Stonehenge of the North' but it's far less visited. The city of Ripon is five miles away: this is England's fourth-smallest city, and with its medieval cathedral is thought to be one of the oldest. At nine each night the Ripon Hornblower sounds the night watch, as it has since 886AD, so that's well over a thousand years.  Mickley B&B is within easy reach of Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and Jervaulx Abbey.

Reviews

"We have just spent 2 nights at Libby’s B&B with friends. We were in the area attending a 50th birthday at Grantley Hall. Libby was a fabulous host. She recommended a river walk to Masham, and a great pub for the Friday night dinner - Stavely Arms. She helped organise a taxi too. I would say that this is the best B & B we’ve stayed in. The house was beautiful with great rooms and lovely bedding and very comfortable beds. The attention to detail was outstanding with even a turndown service and a chocolate! The breakfasts were certainly 5 star ! If we are back in that area we will definitely stay there again. Thank you Libby for everything."
