A 17th century Cornish manor house, glorious again

Cusgarne Manor is a fabulous B&B in the heart of Cornwall, with three guest bedrooms, all en-suite. Unusually for a B&B your hosts live independently in an adjoining cottage, meaning that – apart from at breakfast – guests have the manor house all to themselves, with only a fridge and an honesty bar to hint that it’s not actually their home. The whole place is restored to the highest standards, with formal gardens and 13 acres of private nature reserve.

Most of the guest bedrooms are on the first floor. The Bailey Suite is a large room with a king-sized bed, a connected single bedroom and en-suite wet room. The Simmons Room has a king-sized bed and a large bathroom with free-standing bathtub and walk-in shower. On the top floor the Harris Room runs the whole length of the attic and has a double bed at  one end and a luxury ensuite bathroom at the other. All rooms are individually styled with different colour palettes, and there are high quality mattresses and bedding throughout.

The breakfast room gets the morning sun and is the setting for superb breakfasts with local ingredients, many of which are organic and locally sourced. All dietary requirements can be catered for and the atmosphere is relaxed and convivial. There is a cosy snug stocked with local maps, books and information that is, when the weather demands, heated with a wood-burning stove.

The garden has a formal area with plenty of seats and valley views, while the whole is set in 13 acres of private nature reserve that includes a fully-functioning livery stables. Guscarne Manor B&B doesn’t permit children or dogs so the atmosphere is sophisticated and serene. It’s right in the heart of Cornwall, a six-mile drive – or a rather longer walk – from both north and south coasts, and less than an hour to either Lands End or the border with Devon.

Go self-catering. Cuscarne Manor doesn’t take dogs in the main B&B but has three self-catering units that do. Manor Cottage is a one-bedroom property at the eastern end of the manor with its own garden, Middle Barn is a single-storey two-bedroom property with its own deck and garden, and Lowenna is a level-access, one-bedroom property for up to three guests with wheelchair access.
