Win a two-night stay at Uplands House

Uplands House bed and breakfast exterior

Win the Wolsey Lodges prize for October. This is a two-night weekday stay for two at Uplands House, a multi-award-winning luxury B&B  in the heart of the Cotswolds in the village of Upton, just outside Banbury. Uplands House is a recent winner of the ROSE Award from Visit England, perhaps the most coveted accolade in English Tourism.  It’s within walking distance of Upton House, with its wonderful gardens and collections of furniture, and is close to Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, Stratford on Avon, and Oxford.

In this very civilised part of the UK Uplands House provides a lovely refuge to rest, relax, indulge and enjoy. Guests are free to explore the house and gardens, and there’s also an endlessly civilised guest drawing room to relax in before heading up to your room.

There are three guest bedrooms, all beautifully furnished, spacious and elegant. The Four Poster Room has a dual aspect over the rose garden and fields and a king-sized mattress. Chinese lamps, chintzes, Russian art and antique furnishings set a tranquil tone. The en-suite includes a bath and walk-in shower.

The Chinese Room is a large, south-facing room that can be configured as a double or a twin and has views over the croquet lawn. Old Chinese paper paintings complement a black laquer Chinoiserie dressing table and carved gilt sofa.

Finally the Tulip Room has a king-sized bed, a Louis VI writing desk and 18th century watercolours. Views are of the orangery, rose garden and farmland. You’ll need to be quick to book this though: after January it will be taken out of service.

All beds are extremely comfortable: add fine Egyptian cottons and you’re sure to have a wonderful night’s sleep.

The breakfasts are superb with plenty of choice. Your hosts here are keen gardeners and cooks, so many ingredients come from the gardens. Evening meals are a highlight. From two-course light suppers for four-course feasts the choice is yours: just call ahead to discuss your menu options.

And with just three guest bedrooms – going down to two guest rooms next year – it’s not somewhere that ever feels crowded.
