Country house B&B near the Norfolk Broads

Six miles southeast of Norwich, Washingford House B&B has three bedrooms for guests. Two are twins or large double rooms and there is also a single bedroom.

Washingford House is originally Tudor with Victorian and Georgian additions. It’s the friendliest of places to stay and Paris will immediately make you welcome with tea/coffee on arrival and something home-made. – hopefully on the terrace. It stands in a four acre garden and and Bergh Apton is a conservation village.

The double rooms (twin or large doubles) are large and light-filled with plenty of good books. Paris even offers a “snoring chamber” for an extra £35! The single is cosy with an armchair and its own bathroom. One double is en-suite and the other has its own loo directly next door and a shower a bit further away. There are hospitality trays in all the rooms for you to help yourself to tea or coffee before you come down to breakfast.

Breakfast is in the sitting room with fresh fruit, yogurt, muesli, granola etc. This followed by Eggs Benedict, a Full English, Smoked Salmon with Scrambled Eggs or Crushed Avocado on toast with Poached Eggs and Mushrooms. Also vegan/vegetarian and any special requests are catered for. There are plenty of good local pubs/restaurants in the area and if Paris and Nigel are out, she is happy to prepare dinner for you that can be easily heated up in the oven.

Washingford House suggests:

We welcome dogs and children and we have a high chair, z-bed and plenty of toys and games. There are two nearby playgrounds and plenty of activities for families.

Pricing

Price per room, per night, based on two sharing including breakfast. Rates vary depending on length of stay. Average is £140 for the double en-suite, £120 for the double with private bathroom and £60 for the single bedroom.

Location

Washingford House is six miles South East of Norwich with two stunning cathedrals, a castle and the renowned Sainsbury Centre for visual arts. Past exhibitions include Fabergé, Paul Nash and Giacometti. There are several walks from the house and others a few miles away. The Broads are nearby: you can explore on an organised boat trip or rent your own boat and look around on your own.  Strumpshaw Fen on the River Yare has guided walks or you can stroll along the reedbeds, woodlands and orchid-rich meadows. As well as birds, there are many butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. There are many good restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

Reviews

"It was such a treat to stay at this lovely house. The surroundings are gorgeous, the welcome is, without doubt, the warmest and friendliest ever! Paris and Nigel look after their guests as if they are family and, as others have said, simply can’t do enough for you. The house is enormous with huge comfortably furnished guest rooms flooded with light and beautiful views of the lawns and tennis court. Breakfasts are delicious with all manner of fruit and cereals followed by ‘whatever you like’ cooked breakfast and the most divine coffee! Loved every minute of our stay at Washingford House and can’t praise it enough." Treezlondon, 2020
