A restful retreat to soothe the soul

It’s not unusual for psychotherapists to suggest a holiday, but it’s unusual for them to specify one particular place. But that’s why a steady stream head down from London to experience the tranquil elegance of this very special place, a radical ‘Grand Design’ creation of glass and steel set a few fields from Glastonbury Tor. Around are sheep and trees, inside cosy interiors beautifully furnished with modern facilities and antique art. This is a place where you can relax in luxury and free your spirit.

Upper Crannel Farm Barn was designed by the leading architect Richard Paxton, a regular star of TV’s Grand Designs, and his brief was to make the buildings part of the landscape. In this he more than succeeded: you feel as though he’s brought the landscape into the building. It feels nothing like a ‘rented space’, with excellent paintings, interesting decorative pieces and bookshelves crammed with good books but also modern comforts, with wifi throughout and underfloor heating.

Upper Crannel Farm is perfect for a couple enjoying the peace of this beautiful environment. You’ll immediately be struck by the large picture windows that welcome in panoramic views, of the Mendip Hills and Glastonbury Tor. The farm is set on 200 acres of sheep-cropped pasture, fed by the meandering waters of the river Hartlake: it’s the perfect place .for a romantic rural interlude. There are two guest bedrooms but you’ll never be sharing with strangers. The Barn is rented exclusively and there’s only a second couple if you invite them – and agree to share the bathroom. There is a large living room with a wood-burning stove, underfloor heating throughout and bookshelves lined with carefully chosen books. The dining table is large enough to seat eight and even with four guests staying there’s a lavish sense of space.

The kitchen is always the heart of a home, and here it is large, light, and well equipped. There are sofas to relax, a table suitable for up to eight, and a very elegant fitted kitchen. It’s a generous space, whether you’re cooking or simply relaxing. The kitchen area is equipped with every facility you’d ever need, including cooker, hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, induction cooker, dishwasher and washing machine. It’s easy to use, which is just as well, as though breakfast is provided on the first day you’ll be cooking it yourself. Visitors here appreciate the freedom of making whatever breakfast they want when they want, rather than the formality of a traditional ‘Full English’ served at a set time.

Glastonbury Tor and Glastonbury Abbey are three miles walk away across the fields. The cathedral city of Wells is five miles, with its stunning church buildings, restaurants and idiosyncratic shops. The archaeological site of the Lake Village People, dating back to 2000BC, is half a mile away and the ancient royal capital of Somerset, Somerton, is 20 minutes away by car. The area is filled with attractions but here you're in an unbelievably quiet haven, a completely rural refuge in the heart of the English countryside, under the enigmatic gaze of Glastonbury Tor.
