Rewilding haven on Scotland’s east coast
Troustrie House is a delightful bed and breakfast in a restored Georgian farmhouse set in seven rewilding acres. It’s ideal for St Andrews and the pretty Neuk fishing villages, in a superbly quiet location but just a mile – an easy walk – from historic Crail Harbour.
There are just two guest bedrooms providing elegant, comfortable accommodation. One has a four-poster king-sized bed, the other is a twin. Both have spacious en-suite bathrooms and southerly views over the fields to the Firth of Forth, the Isle of May and the distant Lammermuir hills.
Beds are very comfortable with crisp linens and goose-down duvets, and the beautifully-presented rooms are provided with all the little extras that you might need during your stay including a ‘Butler’s Pantry’ equipped with a fridge and microwave
Downstairs there is a charming guest sitting room with a log-burning stove where you can indulge yourself with an afternoon tea.
Breakfast is served in the lovely dining room and as Troustrie House takes care to act responsibly, ingredients are invariably local, organic and free-range: there are very few food miles needed to provide sumptuous feasts that will set you up for the day.
Outside there is plenty of parking and secure bike storage. But it’s the natural world that takes centre stage. Since 2003 Troustrie House has been rewilding their seven-acre grounds and the results have been dramatic; there is wildlife all around.
It is the perfect base to explore the pretty East Neuk fishing villages, St Andrews and the coast.

LocationTroustrie House is beautifully set in its own seven acres, peacefully rural but only a mile from historic Crail with its harbourside lobster shack. Close to the coast - you can see the Isle of May (NNR) from the bedrooms - so it's ideal for the Fife Coastal Path. The new Fife Pilgrim Way ends in St Andrews. The pretty East Neuk fishing villages are nearby, as is St Andrews (17 minutes by car) - though if you're after a game of golf you don't need to travel so far: Crail's own Balcomie Links Course is the 7th oldest club in the world. With a car there's any number of palaces, distilleries, mountains, historic ships and museums within an hour's drive. Edinburgh is an hour and a half away by car.
Reviews"We booked Troustrie for a much needed mini break and couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to get away from it all. Lesley provided such a warm welcome, and the tea and cake was a lovely (and delicious!) surprise. The four poster bed was absolutely gorgeous, and so comfortable we didn't want to get up in the morning! Our room had beautiful views out to the Isle of May and I loved sitting in the window seat as it got dark and watching the lighthouse come to life. The rural location is perfect for some peace and quiet, and we thoroughly enjoyed the 25 min walk across the fields into Crail for fish and chips at the local pub. We appreciated all of Lesley's thoughtful little touches and were particularly impressed with her rewilding initiative and eco credentials - we were thrilled to spot a sparrowhawk as soon as we arrived! We were thoroughly reassured by Lesley's Covid procedures and felt really safe throughout our stay. We felt totally relaxed after our stay and hope to return soon!" Catherine C, 2020

- Bio : Your host here is Lesley MacGregor, who moved up from East Sussex with her Scottish husband to be close to family in St Andrews. After a year's renovation works they opened Troustrie in 2004 as the only 4* B&B in the area. She greets new guests with home-baked treats and tea on arrival and helps you settle in. She also cooks a sensational breakfast.
