An organic welcome in the Forest of Dean
This traditional farmstead is set in 500 acres between the River Severn and the Forest of Dean. Grove Farm is reached by a mile-long private farm track. It is perfectly placed to explore one of the few places in England where wild boar still roam, and also the bird-filled flatlands of the Severn Estuary. It’s super-quiet: the only sounds are of cattle and guinea fowl, there’s very little light pollution and the night is super-dark – or lit by a canopy of stars. Penny is usually on hand to greet arrivals with tea, coffee and home-made cakes and the atmosphere is very much one of being welcomed into a family home – albeit one that has flag-stone floors, ancient beams and superbly creaking antique wooden doors.
There are just three guest bedrooms here, each with a character all of their own. One is an en-suite, while the other two each have private bathrooms. There’s a choice of kingsize, double and twin beds, all made up with down duvets and crisp linens (hypo-allergenic options or even blankets can also be arranged on request).
There’s a lovely sitting room for guests which gives on to the dining area where breakfast is served. When required it is heated by a log-burning stove: as such an old building the rooms tend to be small and cosy, perfectly fitting the character of this farmstead, but they also manage to be light and airy – a remarkable achievement.

Grove Farm is set back from the nearest road by a mile-long farm track: it's isolated in the finest sense of the word. With the Severn Estuary on one side and the Forest of Dean on the other it's a perfect base for long walks in nature. The Forest of Dean has plenty of woodland walks, bike and pony-trekking trails and now a range of zipwires and canopy walkways at Go Ape! The nearby village of Newnham is a popular place to watch the Severn Bore and the area is rich with pre-Roman history. There are several good pubs in the immediate area so you'll always have plenty of choice for an evening meal.
“The lovely view looks out over the River Severn in the distance and the only sounds are birds and cows – it is so peaceful. Our room was large and comfortably furnished with tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was plenty big enough and well stocked with a heated towel rail and lovely large fluffy towels.
“We had a lovely two-day break and cannot recommend Grove Farm highly enough – stay here and you will not be disappointed.”

David & Penny Hill
- Bio : Your hosts here are David and Penny Hill, who run Grove Farm B&B on an organic basis. They have recently retired from day-to-day farming but the new tenant still farms his cows organically. Wildlife is all around: the grounds are busy with guineau fowl and pheasant while deer, badger, fox and wild boar make their home in the surrounding woodlands. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, as long as they get on with the farm's resident dog, Shanu. For guests who want to take extended walks Penny is more than happy to prepare packed lunches on request.
