A warm welcome with plenty of history

Cantray House is a magnificent mansion facing south over 14 acres of garden and woodland. The property is substantial and beautifully restored, reflecting its history as home to a long line of Clans. With log fires blazing, Cantray House is sumptuously warm. Rooms are immaculately furnished with period and antique furnishings, homely but with a touch of formality: it truly feels like a family home and is a great place to relax, Evening meals can be provided by arrangement and the River Nairn runs through the garden if you’d like to try your hand at fishing.

Though Cantray House is a six-bedroom property only three rooms are let out to guests, meaning it always has a great sense of space. The guest bedrooms are large, with plenty of space for sitting areas. Beds are fitted with very comfortable mattresses, topped with crisp white linens, though much of the furniture is elegantly antique. There are hospitality trays, of course, if you want a quiet cup of tea. Both guest rooms have private bathrooms equipped with quality toiletries, just across the corridor.

With just three guest bedrooms, this substantial property offers a great sense of space. When required fires are always lit in the open fireplaces, and in the warmer months the gardens are beautiful, perfect for long summer evenings and games of croquet with spectacular views.

Cantray House is fantastically accessible. Inverness Airport is just ten minutes away, and an airport pickup can be easily arranged. Inverness city is nine miles away, opening up a range of things to do and see, including the Old Town with its covered Victorian market, 18th-century High Church and 19th-century Cathedral. This is the cultural centre of the Scottish Highlands, and highlights of the area include the battlefield at Culloden and, of course, Loch Ness. You may not see the monster but the ruins of medieval Urquhart Castle are always there. Cantray House is well-placed for exploring Northern Scotland and the Western Isles.

Neil & Jan McLauchlan

  • Bio : Your hosts here are Neil and Jan McLauchlan, along with their dogs (though these live outside). Jan used to be a model and now indulges her love of interior design and art. Neil is a very keen historian, with a great knowledge of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. He also has an interest in a marina, is a local magistrate and has a passion for vintage cars. At present Cantray house is no longer offering evening meals as there are a number of excellent restaurants within four miles, for which transport can be arranged if required.
